Domain Industry

The History of the domain industry and domain name goes back to the year 1972. The IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) started assigning addresses to each computer connected to the web as early as 1972. The next step was to develop a nameserver, which allowed networks users to type an address such as example.com instead of typing an ip-address.

In the year 1991 an architecture of domain name system was created to help the DNS information to be spread more widely and faster. Internet Network Information Centre (InterNIC) was established to handle the task. Later InterNIC was replaced by ICANN, which was founded 1998.

Currently there are about twenty million domain names registered!
